Where the time goes when a terminal opens

1 November 2026

For a lot of people, how fast a terminal opens is the most important thing about a terminal app. So I measured it in Kodosi. The shell itself starts in 3 ms. Everything slow was the interface around it.

From the click to the tile on screen went from 63 ms to 28 ms. From the click to the terminal drawn went from 95 ms to 45 ms. The window used to get more than 200 size events while a terminal opened. Now it gets 13.

The main waste was one SwiftUI animation that ran across the whole tile. After the shell writes its first output, Kodosi and Ghostty both paint it in 4 to 24 ms.

The measurements are in PR #193.
